Mt. Diablo Unified School District

Mt. Diablo’s Ready-Set-Go plan will provide school readiness services to young children and families living nearby seven low-performing elementary schools located in the Monument Corridor area of Concord and Bay Point:

Concord – Monument

  • Cambridge Elementary
  • Fair Oaks Elementary
  • Meadow Homes Elementary
  • Ygnacio Valley Elementary

Bay Point

  • Bel Air Elementary
  • Rio Vista Elementary
  • Shore Acres Elementary

In the seven target neighborhoods, the rate of unemployment, number of students receiving free or reduced price lunch, and number of immigrant and non-English speaking adults is higher than in the other school attendance areas in the district. In two of the seven participating schools, only half of all third graders read at or above grade level. In the other five schools, the percentage of third graders reading at or above grade level ranges from 16 percent to 32 percent.

The Ready-Set-Go Plan was developed in partnership with parents, child care providers, kindergarten teachers, school district personnel and representatives from community-based organizations. $830,000 in Prop.10 funds will be used over the next four years to implement the following school readiness programs:

  • Every Monument Corridor school offering CBET (ESL, literacy, & parenting education) will enhance existing childcare with 6-12 hours/week of a formal preschool program
  • All seven schools will start using United Way’s Raising a Reader, a lap-reading program that promotes parent-child bonding through reading
  • Every school in Bay Point (3) plus one Monument Corridor school will implement a new parent-child cooperative preschool where no such program existed previously
  • Every school will provide outreach workers and parent liaisons for families living in targeted attendance areas to link families with schools, share information and materials about appropriate school readiness and transition to kindergarten activities, and to connect every family with community supports
  • A Transition Coordinator, a new position for the district, will provide training to school staff and outreach workers on school readiness activities and will coordinate district-wide school readiness efforts
  • Each school will create a new “Transition Team” comprised of staff and parents to plan and implement transition activities; a “Community Collaborative Transition Team” comprised of parents, providers, teachers, administrators, outreach workers, and community agency personnel, will act as an advisory committee to insure implementation success and coordinate community resources
