| POSITION TITLE: Regional Community Outreach Worker GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Contra Costa Children & Families Commission wants all young children in Contra Costa County to be in safe, nurturing families and communities, grow up healthy, and be ready and eager to learn. To help us achieve this vision, we are building four regional committees where a diverse group of community members will work with us to advocate for family-friendly policies and encourage additional community members to join us in this work. We are seeking applicants to help us establish relationships with, and recruit participants from, parents groups, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, schools, local businesses, labor representatives, local policymakers, etc. in four regions of Contra Costa County. We plan to hire three or four part-time staff to represent a different geographic area of the county. We will begin convening the committees in July 2001. JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: - Organize and conduct community outreach and public education in one particular region of the county.
- Develop a network and build connections with community groups to deepen their involvement with the Commission.
- Attend and/or organize community events, conduct presentations to local community groups, and meet with community members to determine strategies for recruitment and to convey the vision, mission, and purpose of the Commission.
- Maintain contact with and records about potential Committee members.
- Recruit and coordinate participants for one Regional Committee.
- Provide staff support for one Regional Committee.
- Research issues identified by Committee members.
- Implement and coordinate activities developed by Committee members.
- Promote advocacy in the community on issues related to the Commissions mission.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - B.A. in social work or related human service field (education, health, mental health, criminal justice, planning), or a minimum of three years progressively responsible paid or volunteer experience in the areas of education, social work, health, and/or community organizing with youth and families.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish, Mien, Vietnamese) preferred, but not required.
- Strong organizational and networking skills and an ability to motivate diverse groups of people.
- Previous work experience with multicultural individuals/groups.
- Collaborative work style that includes the ability to act as a liaison with parents, community members and organizations in a particular region of Contra Costa County.
- Possess strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer skills, particularly word processing.
- Be willing to work at night, on weekends and be generally flexible with your time.
- Familiarity with stakeholders of a particular region of Contra Costa County preferred.
- Possession of a California Drivers License and auto insurance.
